We were given a brief to create a animated narrative that had to be synchronised with audio. Along with the brig we received some audio poems about nature and told we could either use these or find our own narrative. After listening to the filesI decided that I was going to find my own audio. I looked at Ted Talks and spoken word poetry and eventually came across a poem that I liked called 'Repetition' by Phil Kaye. I listened to this a few times through and then went about downloading the audio from a link that he had supplied on the video. Once I had done this I researched a bit more into the poem, looking at the lyrics and his website. I also found a kinetic typography video that someone had made to a section of this poem. Repetition Lyrics My mother taught me this trick If you repeat something over and over again it loses its meaning For example: Homework, homework, homework, homework, homework, homework, homework, homework See, nothing Our lives, she said, are the same way. You watch the sun set too often, it just becomes 6 PM You make the same mistake over and over; you’ll stop calling it a mistake If you just wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, one day you’ll forget why I should have known. Nothing is forever, she said My parents left each other when I was 7 years old Before their last argument they sent me off to the neighbor’s house, like some astronaut jettisoned from the shuttle. When I came back there was no gravity in our home, beds floating I imagined it as an accident, that when I left They whispered to each other “I love you” so many times over that they forgot what it meant Family, family, family, family, family, family My mother taught me this trick If you repeat something over and over again it loses its meaning This became my favorite game It made the sting of words evaporate. Separation, separation, separation; see, nothing Apart, apart, apart, apart; see, nothing I am an injured handyman I work with words all day Shut up, I know the irony! When I was young, I was taught that the trick to dominating language was breaking it down Convincing it that it was worthless I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you; See, nothing Soon after my parents’ divorce, I developed a stutter Fate is a cruel and efficient tutor There is no escape in stutter You can feel the meaning of every word drag itself up your throat S-s-s-separation Stutter is a cage made of mirrors Every “What’d you say?” Every “Just take your time” Every “Come on kid, spit it out” Is a glaring reflection of an existence you cannot escape Every awful moment trips over its own announcement Again and again until it just hangs there, In the center of the room, As if what you had to say had no gravity at all. Mom, Dad, I am not wasteful with my words anymore. Even now after hundreds of hours of practicing away my stutter, I still feel the claw of meaning in the bottom of my throat. Listen to me I have heard that even in space; You can hear the scratching of a I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I love you. Animation synced with Audio I now wanted to look at some examples of animations that are synced up with audio, Specifically looking at spoken word. I found this to be interesting because in the majority of the examples I found the narrative was engaging and the audio flowed seamlessly within it.
Styles of Animation I wanted to look into the different styles of animation that could be achieved within after effects. Below are just some of the styles that I came across, from line drawings to cartoons. Whilst listening to this poem I was immediately drawn to two style of animation that I could potentially use the first is kinetic typography and the second is lack and white line drawings. I think that either of these styles would work nicely with the audio clip that I have chosen. In terms of visualising the story I think it is better to use an image based animation as it allows the story and message to be interpreted more freely. I decided to make my own storyboard template as the spoken word piece that I have chosen has a lot of audio. I then decided to create a style/mood board for my animation to show the type of animation that I will be making. This will also help me later on in the project because I will be able to refer back to it. Rather than doing this using still images I decided to use gifs. I feel these will better represent my ideas for this project. I have created 2 of these boards, one for the image based scenes and one for the type that will be used within the animation. As well as looking at the style of the image and text I was also focusing of the style of the animation. Animatics: The next step to progressing my project was to create an animatic, but first I needed to do some research into what an animatic was. I looked up its definition as well as researching examples of other peoples animatics to help me gain a better understanding of the type of thing I should create.
I began creating my animatic in after effects, placing each part of my storyboard into the programme and began aligning it with the audio, so the image would appear when the scene started. Although the above video does fit the description of an animatic I don't think that it shows the intention and meaning behind the scenes. I wanted to show some of the movement that will happen throughout my animation. So I edited the animatic to include some very basic animation that illustrates what happens in each scene. Below are the results along with some screen shots of the process. Overall I am pleased with the way my animatic turned out. I feel that this along with the style/mood boards that I created help to paint a picture of the direction that I want this animation to go in. I chose not to add any colour to my animatic because the final animation will be in black and white, as illustrated by my style/mood boards.
