I wanted to research into the history of type making technologies. Whilst looking I came across a page on a design history website which gave a timeline of some of the advances that had been made (http://www.designhistory.org/Digital_Revolution_pages/EarlyDigType.html). I found this particually helpful because it allowed me to see not only the developments of type making technology but also explored the development of digital fonts. I also looked at some books which I thought were interesting and gave me a good insight into the meanings behind different fonts and typefaces and the way that we interpret them. One of which was 'Why Fonts Matter' by Sarah Hyndman. This book was good because it gave specific examples of fonts and included questions and examples to help further prove the point. Another point within my essay was explore the use of typography within design and whether that has become more free and creative. After looking into this subject I feel that it has. Many of the articles, books and websites that I read had mentioned that type has become more popular within design. I think this is because as the technologies that enabled the range of type to increase, the amount of creative freedom there was within the design and advertising industries (people were no longer restricted to using only one style of font within their work. In terms of how this has impacted the advertising industry, I feel that this freedom has been reflected in the styles of adverts being created.

For my essay I am going to write about Typography in design. The reason I have chosen this subject is because it it something that interests me and is used in design all of the time. I particularly want to focus on the developments that have been made technologically and the impact that that has had on the styles / amount of type that is used in design within particular times throughout history. In order to get a better understanding and sense of the topics I will write about I have found some potential resources that I might use to help me write my essay. Below are some of the resources that I have found.
I also came across a few documentaries that could be quite interesting to look at. The first one I found is called '83M80 - Letterpress In The Digital Era' by Gonzalo Hergueta and MRKA. It talks about movable type and showcases a historical timeline of the type and the technologies that influence visual communication.
The second one I found is one that I have already watched for a previous project I worked on, however I feel it is relevant t this essay so I will revisit it. It is 'Helvetica' directed by Gary Hustwit. It explores the history of this font and why it is universally appealing. It also touches on how type can affect culture. Although it only focuses on one specific typeface I feel this documentary can give me some insight into the way that type is developed and the reasons certain types are used more than others. Although there are a lot more resources that I will use when writing my essay I feel that these are the ones that will inform me the most as they are the most relevant to my topic. For example I found an article outlining some of the best books about type. I started out by drafting up an essay plan that outlined the key topic I would talk about in each paragraph. I then took this into uni to get feedback from my peers and tutor. One of the things that was mentioned was the topic being rather broad and that I might find it difficult to include all of the information that I want in the word count. I decided to narrow down my essay plan to look specifically at advertising. Below is my new essay plan.
