I wanted to research into the history of type making technologies. Whilst looking I came across a page on a design history website which gave a timeline of some of the advances that had been made (http://www.designhistory.org/Digital_Revolution_pages/EarlyDigType.html). I found this particually helpful because it allowed me to see not only the developments of type making technology but also explored the development of digital fonts. I also looked at some books which I thought were interesting and gave me a good insight into the meanings behind different fonts and typefaces and the way that we interpret them. One of which was 'Why Fonts Matter' by Sarah Hyndman. This book was good because it gave specific examples of fonts and included questions and examples to help further prove the point. Another point within my essay was explore the use of typography within design and whether that has become more free and creative. After looking into this subject I feel that it has. Many of the articles, books and websites that I read had mentioned that type has become more popular within design. I think this is because as the technologies that enabled the range of type to increase, the amount of creative freedom there was within the design and advertising industries (people were no longer restricted to using only one style of font within their work. In terms of how this has impacted the advertising industry, I feel that this freedom has been reflected in the styles of adverts being created.
