I chose to do this topic because I think it is important to preserve the planet for future generations. With countless animals becoming close to extinction and trees being cut down at an astonishing rate, this is a topic which I feel is important to highlight. Researching into the different ways that others have approached this topic allowed me to identify which techniques I liked and which I didn't. Below are some examples of gifs that I feel have conveyed the message of climate change in an effective way Looking at the above two gifs for inspiration I was able to write a list of all aspects of climate change that I could convey within my gif. I then began to come up with visualisations for all of the topics. The one I chose to go with in the end is simple, but makes you think. It was important for me that the design I went with had no text and that it was able to convey the message effectively.

The first gif that I wanted to create was about how people seem to be 'addicted' to wifi. It has become the norm to ask people for their wifi password just seconds after you have stepped through their door. I feel that many people don't realise just how much they rely on having an internet connection in everyday life! I started brainstorming ideas for possible gifs and did some research into existing gifs that were out there, below I have included a couple that I thought represented the topic well. Whilst brainstorming ideas for this gif it reminded me of an exhibition that I had visited at Somerset House earlier in the year. It was the Big Bang Data Exhibition and showed just how easily data was relayed via the internet. One part of the exhibition showed how just by searching for the #cat they were able to pinpoint the locations of thousands of cats. Showing just how easily data is transferred through the internet. I then drew some sketches relating to a couple of the ideas I had for this gif, scanned them in and coloured them in. This allowed my gifs to have a handmade feel to them, whilst still being digital. I then used photoshop to create a frame animation from my images and altered the timings to make it run more smoothly. To me the original gif felt a bit distant, which is why I decided to add a colour to the background. This also helped to tie the whole thing together. Looking into gifs that have been created was interesting. It showed me just how many ways there are to create a gif, the possibilities are endless! Some of the gifs that I found really inspiring were by Cinemagraphs, the way in which they make gifs is something that I have never come across before. One of the themes that runs throughout their work is the idea of taking a photograph and adding movement to one of the elements within the photograph. Some of my favourite examples are below. Another designers work that I liked was Tom Moody. His designs are simple yet hypnotic, making the viewer unaware of where the beginning and end is. Below are some of his designs that I particularly liked. |
